Analog Addresses

Remember paper address books? Begin rebuilding analog records. Imagine that you lost your phone and the data was unrecoverable. What would it take to get back in touch with your people *without* getting online and asking them to ping you?

How to do it:

Buy an address book — yes, a paper one! — or create a document with name, phone and address. Imagine all your devices were without power — add anyone you’d want to be able to call on a borrowed phone, or drive to. If you create a document, print new copies regularly and store in multiple locations. If you use a paper book, store with the other documents you’d grab in an emergency.

Once you compile family, close friends and professionals like doctors, begin adding people you might want to contact if you were travelling. Online friends who say “I’d love to get coffee someday” or an old neighbor who moved are good candidates. If you’ve lost touch, rekindle those relationships if you can. We’re building a strong, offline network for emergencies.
