Be Darth Vader

Symbolic evil makes a great way to get your point across. People across the political spectrum absorbed Star Wars as a formative story and have a visceral reaction to the trappings of evil depicted there.

Creative activists have used this to make a point about the actions of the regime. You can find creative ways to get your own point out, too! Choose a universe you love and know well, and frame a theatrical message within that world. Vader, Sauron, Ferengi…use shared symbolic language to convey your meaning quickly and memorably (and often with press!)

How to do it:

Darth Vader

Darth Vader appeared at a San Diego city council meeting to speak in favor of Flock surveillance cameras. The meeting was sparsely attended and would have been unremarkable, but the spectacle drew media coverage across the nation, spreading his satiric praise for surveillance technology to a vastly wider audience. Theater works! Here is a news clip from Seattle:

Sam O’Hara filmed himself playing the Imperial March while he walked behind National Guard in DC. They called Metro police, who detained him. The ACLU sued on his behalf, and DC settled his lawsuit with an offer of $50,000.
