Boycott Sinclair

Sinclair isn’t just capitulating, it’s eager for more. Identify local Sinclair-owned stations. Be polite when you call — staff may be on your side — to tell them you’ll be asking local advertisers to stop ad buys. Click through for details

How to do it:

First, find your local affiliate. If it’s ABC, it’s refusing to air Kimmel, but even if it isn’t, the company has formally taken a position. Boycott it all. Note that Sinclair is not censoring Kimmel — they have the right to make business decisions for any legal reason, including to support fascism. We have the right to spend our attention and money in places that align with our values. That’s what we’re doing.

Next, identify local advertisers. Check Reddit for lists associated with your local station or watch a broadcast and compile your own lists. If you watch broadcast and are NOT a Nelson family, they can’t measure you. (Avoid streaming.) Publicize these advertiser lists to help others. Tag local businesses in social media and ask them to stop advertising, to help others find them.

Contact these companies (phone calls are good, walkins are even better!) and tell them you will suspend your purchases until they suspend their ad buys, or Sinclair stops suspending Kimmel.

Call the station and tell them you’re doing this. Be polite — your station staff didn’t decide to be owned by Sinclair, and in some areas are probably on your side. Talk to the manager or the sales staff.

Find local protests and show up when you can.

Sinclair came out with the strong statement in the image above six days ago. Yesterday they announced they wouldn’t air Kimmel in much weaker language. They’re vulnerable. Hit hard, then we go after Nexstar’s merger/acquisition.
