Boycott Starbucks

There are many opinions on how to wield economic pressure effectively, but this one is simple: don’t cross a picket line.

Starbucks’s workers walked out November 13th in a nationwide open-ended strike. Pick a different coffee shop until the strike ends.

Why we do it:

Workers’ power relies on our collaboration. For a walkout to work, especially in a poor job market, the rest of us have to stand with the workers. Whatever you think about broader economic pressure like permanent bans on Amazon or an “everything including travel” ban over Thanksgiving, please commit to never crossing an actual (or virtual) picket line. Don’t shop where workers are on strike.

NOTE: not all Starbucks locations will have a formal strike. The union is beginning with a limited strike of 65 unionized stores, and may add additional locations, and not all Starbucks locations are unionized. (Ending union-busting efforts is one of the union’s demands.) We encourage you to avoid all Starbucks locations, but if you have a compelling need to shop there (like a corporate account you have to use for meetings) please look for a location that is not currently striking.

You can read each sides’ claims and find a list of current strike locations in this reporting.

You can also check on negotiations or sign a customer pledge card at the Union’s No Coffee No Contract site.

If you usually give Starbucks gift certificates for the holidays, pick a local coffee shop instead. Locally spent dollars keep our communities afloat, so spread the word about a personal favorite.
