Go to a Museum

Go to a museum. Visit a park. Ride the bus. If we don’t use public resources, they look expendable. When we appreciate them, we stand up for them.

Pay admission, or check your city for “public access” dates. (In Seattle, that’s the first Thursday of each month.)

Why we do it:

Museums inspire us or make us think. Arboretums provide peace and habitat. Comedy shows challenge and entertain us. Music inspires or soothes us. Art is critical to our emotional resilience, our education and our community, so support it. Chances are you rarely visit nearby attractions — after all, you can do it any time and the laundry is piling up. But what if you couldn’t?

Public spaces are the best of society, but if we don’t use them, we’ll lose them. Spend time exploring your city with the eyes of a tourist. Where do you forget to go? Where have you always meant to visit? Explore local resources too: your library probably holds events you’d value, if you knew about them. Whenever you can, buy tickets or donate, but if money is tight go to free events like art walks or see if your city has a free-admission day, discounts for residents, or a free pass you can “borrow” from the library.
