Are you all-in on Halloween? Plan a party or yard display around a political theme like “Death of Democracy.” Plan a political costume that expresses your hopes or fears.
If you live in a conservative area, go subtler: dress up as Trump, and turn up the volume on your caricature. Then play it perfectly straight.
How to do it:
You don’t need party-planning tips, so here’s inspiration:
- Make your yard a hellmouth with characters from the regime
- add gravestones to your yard with patriotic principles (Freedom, Liberty, etc.)
- throw a wake for Democracy, complete with eulogies
- Look online for dozens of creative costumes
- Set up a gallows scene. Depicting current leaders might attract police attention, these days. To avoid that, go with historical figures and let the message be implied. Or go all-in and call the ACLU if they harass you. Your call.
- Avoid costumes and themes depicting the communities they target, unless you’re in those communities. Avoid echoes of them that could come off as bigotry instead of satire.
What could be scarier than fascism?! Get creative and express yourself!
