Lost Tips

Shutdowns that include service industries are hard on tipped workers. This is doubly true for shutdowns on busy days, like the “ICE OUT OF EVERYWHERE” shutdown on January 30th.

During closures, look for businesses supporting the cause. Make a plan to go soon, and tip twice what you usually would, if you can.

Why we do it:

Economic pressure is important, but like so many things it hits the wrong folks hardest. Walmart and Target don’t care if you don’t shop on Friday, so we have to sustain those actions. Losing a Friday of tips can be devastating for the barista in a small coffee shop, though.

Pay attention to the businesses that take sympathetic actions, and make a point of shopping there—and telling them why! If you see businesses voluntarily closed on a day of action, spread the word, and make a plan to meet a friend there when the action is over. Help the small, friendly businesses survive!
