Phone Bank

With midterms around the corner and turnout the decisive factor in every election, It’s time to brush off phone banking skills, or join a GOTV group like the League of Women Voters or the League of Minority Voters.

If you backed the winner of a primary, then you especially have a responsibility to spread the word! Get out there and turn out the vote!

How to do it:

Phonebanks are generally virtual, and you’ll need a computer as well as your phone. There are several popular software platforms, but the general idea is you’ll get a quick training and log on with your computer. Tell the software you’re ready for your first number and it gives you the script. As the call proceeds there may be points where you mark responses and the script diverges. At the end of the call you’ll record whether the call was answered, and how the person responded, then when you’re ready the software gives you the next call until they are all completed, or the time is ended.

Reputable groups start with known-number lists, so hostile responses are fairly rare, and usually limited to requests not to call. (There’s an option for that.) The most rewarding phone banks we’ve participated in are educational ones: informing voters of polling dates, where to find polling locations, and the like. With GOP shenanigans underway we’ll need more of that in the midterms than ever, so pick a special election and learn how to phone bank now!
