Remember all the boy scout controversy, from pedophile coverups to gender wars? They’ve been working to tackle those issues…and are now under attack on the right for “going woke.”
Many troops operate Christmas Tree lots, or have pick-up services. If you stopped going because they were problematic, look again!
Why we do it:
The Boy Scouts were plagued with pedophilia scandals and accusations of gender discrimination. Despite courts upholding a right to ban gay and bisexual scouts and leaders, they ended that practice in 2014 (scouts) and 2015 (leaders). In 2018 they began admitting girls and transgender boys and changed their name to “Scouting America.”
Now they are under attack from the right for “going woke.” Hegseth has accused them of “attack(ing) boy-friendly spaces” and is threatening to withhold military first aid and support services for their 2026 National Jamboree, despite congressional legislation mandating it. Whether you think the military should support youth programs or not, Scouting America is paying a high price for doing the right thing, while most people are unaware of their evolution.
If you’ve avoided buying Scout trees or otherwise supporting scouting, it may be time to reconsider.
