Show Up

Movies teach us resistance is about complicated plots and brave attacks, but mostly, it isn’t. Resistance is about sticking together and refusing to give up. Even HCR must have days she isn’t sure she can face the task she’s chosen. On those days, one person saying the work matters, or showing up in a tough moment, can make all the difference.

How to do it:

Take every opportunity to tell people in your world that you see the good things they’re doing. It doesn’t matter if they’re on a first-name basis with the nation, or they voted for the first time: tell them you see them, and what they’re doing matters. Consider starting a variant of “thankful Thursday” where at least one item is a person you appreciate, or find another way to cultivate the habit of saying “I see you, and I appreciate you.”

If you have friends in minority communities (you do, right?) show up. Go to a cultural event with them, send a note asking if they’re okay if something bad happens, or post — without fanfare — about the things you’re doing as an ally.
