Gov’t Shutdown (Expires OCT1)

A government shutdown seems likely. If it happens, many services will be impacted on October 1st, so take care of any government business you need to handle ASAP. This includes phone calls, in-office visits, and even web sites (because staff may interact on the backend.)

Why:

Put your oxygen mask on so you can keep up the fight!

Why is this happening? To keep government open, the Senate has to vote on a funding extension with a 60-vote threshold. Traditionally Democrats were willing to compromise on nearly anything to avoid the disruption of a shutdown. (Here’s what could happen.)

This time they face a constituency asking them to fight back and Trump has refused to even meet with leadership, much less negotiate a compromise. So much for the great negotiator! A shutdown will advance right-wing goals of dismantling even more jobs and agencies, but it will also impact their plans. They may publicly gloat about “firing even more people!” but the reality is they’ve been quietly begging people they already fired to come back. Actually dismantling the government demonstrates that it DOES work for us — and their voters will notice. A shutdown removes their ability to carve apart our government at their speed and turns up the volume so people notice.
