Singing Resistance!

Do you love to sing? Singing Resistance is a decentralized music-oriented group that engages in actions like singing in solidarity or to bring visibility. More than just singing, this is a way to connect with like-minded people. Find a group, or start one! The organizing document is clear, explicit, and easy to follow. If you’ve been considering stepping into any organizing, read through their materials!

How to do it:

Join:

There are dozens of chapters up and running nationwide. If one exists near you, reach out and see what they’re doing! If you aren’t sure this is “real’ activism, learn more about how singing has been used to resist in Minnesota.

Just start Singing:

Sing: the songbook is public, so if you aren’t ready to join (or organize) a group, you can still learn the songs (with a couple of friends?) so you’ll be ready if you hear people singing at a protest. Or just show up spontaneously with a few friends—this is a decentralized movement! You don’t need permission. (No, we can’t tell you how that’s different from organizing, but maybe it feels easier?)

Be an organizer:

The materials to help organizers are some of the best I’ve ever seen. If this feels like your lane, and you have ANY willingness to do some organizing, they’ll show you the ropes. Start with their organizing document to learn how the decentralized structure works, and how to start one. Check their linktree for upcoming trainings, resources, or to find a coach to help you get going.

Even if singing isn’t the kind of organizing you want to do, this is a really useful, detailed organizing guide that would be useful for any new organizer working on nearly any public-facing action. It’s like people who organize choirs and concerts know a few things about planning. 😉
