Spend SNAP
SNAP funding has been stripped down, and eligibility is harder than ever, but there are still some loopholes that mean some people get more than they can use in a month.
Older people on certain kinds of supplemental insurance may have SNAP benefits and other food benefits that add up to more than they need. If you’re in this situation (or know someone who is) share the surplus.

Why we do it:
SNAP benefits roll over, so don’t feel obligated to spend down every month, but if you routinely have more than you spend there are a lot of people who have been kicked off SNAP and could use help. You might not think of yourself as someone with extra to share, but if you’re carrying a balance, you are!
First build up a small backstock of shelf-stable foods if you can. Food prices are likely to rise, and SNAP funding won’t rise with them. Worse, who knows when this administration will hold benefits hostage again? If you have no space for a backstock, consider teaming up with a family that does. They store for you, and you share with them. If transportation is difficult, maybe they’ll share the shopping burden, too?
If that still leaves you with surplus, check with your local food bank. What products do they most want that your SNAP can offer? Add a few items to your shopping list and donate regularly (or drop in a local pantry — they want the same kinds of foods.)
We know this one won’t apply to very many people, but if even a few people realize they have enough to share, it means less hungry folks.
