Turn off tracking
Don’t wait until protest attendance is risky to learn how to turn off phone tracking. Practice makes things easier, so learn before you need it.
The only truly secure way not to be tracked is to not take your phone, and the easiest is to put your phone in airplane mode. Easier said than done if you rely on mapping. What are the intermediate options?

How to do it:
As usual for technical privacy, we turn to the Electronic Frontier Foundation. At the most basic level, security involves installing fewer apps, checking permissions for everything you grant access, and putting your phone in airplane mode for resistance gatherings (like protests.)
To step things up, get a second “clean” phone and read on to discover whether it’s okay to connect it to your main phone account, use it for mapping, or install your favorite game on it to pass time.
