Creative Activism

Take stock of your hobbies and interests. Are you artistic? Help make protest signs. Do you love to sew? Offer to help build someone’s persona. Do you love photography? Add protest-relevant images to a free online repository like Wikimedia.

How to do it:

Western culture convinces us that anything we do well, or easily, isn’t valuable. Break out of that mold: you are most powerful when you engage in the things you’re good at and enjoy. Those are the things that will bring you back to the fight when you’re worn out. You will be more effective going with your nature, than against it, every time.

Take stock of who you are:

  • do you love to throw a party? Throw a party with a postcard writing table, host salons with a fifteen minute speaker before cocktails, or start a resistance book club with crumpets.
  • do you like to sew? Offer to help people create protest personas. Volunteer with a local mend-it club. Raffle of a resistance-themed quilt and donate the proceeds.
  • are you artistic? Invite people to join you for sign making, or offer to create signs for them. Join a group and start an art committee to make big protest pieces, like the massive constitution at the June 14th Seattle No Kings event.
  • is cooking your jam? contribute to feeding unhoused people, make dinner for a struggling neighbor (or trade, to preserve dignity) or join a friend who has a nice space hosting trainings with pastries
  • are you a born listener? Get trained in de-escalation and observation skills. Protests are constantly looking for more volunteers.

Stop fighting your nature. If you hate public spaces, you don’t have to protest yourself. You can support protests, drive by honking, or be a citizen journalist. If you have ADHD like me, don’t assume you have to pick one lane and stick to it forever. Pick something intense, go all in (I build this web site in two weeks) and then hand it off to others when your attention fades.

Be you, bravely and boldly. That’s what this is all about!
