Phone Home

While most of us gather with family or friends, inmates and people in detention have to pay just to make a phone call. When wage-earners are locked up, families struggle to make ends meet, and phone calls may be a luxury they can’t afford. Help by contributing funds to a phone-access charity today.

How to do it:

The Commissary Fund helps imprisoned people make phone calls and buy items from the commisary. As we shift the costs of incarceration onto people who have made mistakes (and their families) we increase the risk of repeat offenders. Instead, help people stay connected to people who love them, and reduce recidivism.

Detained immigrants also pay for phone calls to family. Many immigrant rights groups help fund phone cards, so ask your local group, or donate to AIDNW. For $24/month, you can gift 80 minutes on the phone to someone in the Tacoma detention center.
