Throw a fundraiser

Plan a party with a purpose. Charities do it all the time, and you can too! Plan a dinner with single-serve desserts and have an auction. Plan a bingo night with proceeds to the food bank.

Let people know what the plan is up-front, and indulge your guests like any other social event.

How to do it:

Charities monetize all kinds of activities. Pick whatever your friends already enjoy doing, and ask if they’d enjoy doing it for a good cause. Put out a tip jar, have suggested ticket (donation) prices, or play a game and donate to the winner’s charity. For inspiration, think about social events that cost something: from organized hikes to bingo people regularly pay to have someone plan the fun! Just make sure you tell the people you invite how the night works up front, before they commit. That should include where the money is going, unless it’s winner’s choice.

  • Poker night, pot goes to the winner’s charity of choice
  • a dinner party with a “tip jar” for the food bank
  • “tickets” to a gin tasting
  • speakeasy costume night with a cover
  • supply the tarp and tools, and invite families over to carve pumpkins, string popcorn, or plant seeds for summer garden starts.
  • auction an item or service, proceeds to charity (can be done online!)

The sky’s the limit. Think about all the ways charities raise money, and use it to have some fun, build community, and support mutual aid.
