Colleges and other community spaces sometimes fund raise with etched stones or park-bench plaques. For a set fee, you can memorialize a loved one forever.
Why not memorialize our nation’s sins, instead? If you have the cash and want to support a worthy project, consider buying a tile to remind people of our nation’s sins.
How to do it:
This is one of the more privileged tasks we’ve set. Tiles and plaques usually start at a few hundred dollars and can cost thousands. We only recommend this action if you already wanted to support the project raising funds.
Take inspiration from the Stolperstein project, which keeps a memory of slaughtered Jews alive across Europe with subtle, unobtrusive permanent records of people who once lived. Find ways to memorialize the people dead to this regime’s indifference and cruelty, not just now, but for generations to come. Depending on the rules of the inscriptions, this could be a general remembrance of “the 500,000 children who relied on USAID” or it could be inclusion of the name of someone ICE has killed in your area.
Or use the space in a more positive way, memorializing one of the minority heroes being wiped from our records by the regime. Innovative women, emancipation heroes, WWII Nisei patriots and more are being removed from national memory—if they won’t say their names, we will write them in stone.
