Daily Tasks

A collection of all the concrete, simple steps we have imagined so far. If you would like to refine your search further, we’ve broken them down into tasks that take money, tasks that take time, and things that help you be resilient, so you can keep resisting for as long as it takes. Postdate

For 250 years the post office stamped mail the day you dropped it, even in a blue box. Under Trump that ended. If you need a postmark by a specific date, you have to walk up to the counter and request it. Tell people about this change before it’s time to drop ballots (or bills!) and make sure they understand it’s part of a long-term GOP effort to privatize the mail. None of this had to happen.

Trans(cend) bigotry

If you don’t know anyone transgender and the whole thing makes you uncomfortable, watch “Will & Harper,” a documentary about Will Farrell taking a road trip with an old friend, newly out. Public Funding

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting was defunded and then shut down to avoid being mis-used. This leaves PBS, NPR, and hundreds of local radio and tv stations in our hands. Donate and get great content, or buy merchandise to keep them going! We’re currently binging “All Creatures Great and Small” when the world is too much.

SNAP benefits roll over, so don’t feel obligated to spend down every month, but if you routinely have more than you spend, share! Yes, this happens, particularly for older single people with multiple food supplements. You might not think of yourself as someone with extra to share, but if you’re carrying a balance every month, you are! Build up a shelf-stable backstop against rising prices, then start helping people!

Adopt a family

The economy is likely to get harder for a while. Are you in a position to help someone? Maybe someone specific? If you know a family that’s struggling, an elder who has lost meal service, or someone who has been looking for work for months, could you help? Inspired by a woman who posted “I can afford to feed a small family. One adult and up to two children” on her Buy Nothing group, how about something a little less simple: commit to helping someone long-term. Set boundaries and be prepared to tighten your own belt to help someone.
