self care

Resistance is a marathon, not a sprint. Sometimes we have to pause and focus on our own resilience. That isn’t apathy, it’s essential! The key is to make a plan for getting back to the fight. Rest regularly, and have a plan to get re-involved. Some ideas:

  • schedule something on the calendar now to mark the end of your break.
  • Tell an activist friend you’re taking a break and ask them to check in with you after a period of time.
  • Schedule your break activities, and when they’re done, return to the fight.

Go to a Museum

Go to a museum. Visit a park. Ride the bus. If we don’t use public resources, they look expendable. When we appreciate them, we stand up for them. Pay admission, or check your city for “public access” dates. (In Seattle, that’s the first Thursday of each month.)

Expand your comfort zone

Do something outside your comfort zone today. Go to a protest, call your senator, or join a local group to learn more. Or do something that isn’t resistance related at all! Speak in public or invite someone to lunch. Practice courage and you’ll build courage!

Reward Restaurants

The food industry is one of the few not utterly monopolized in America. Protests can disrupt and drive away business, so if you’re turning out to an event, spend some money (cash is good!) at a nearby business. Take your sign along, and be a good customer.

Buy Bling

Get a t-shirt, jewelry, lanyard, pin, button, sticker…something that lets people know where you stand. I recently complimented a rainbow-flag peeking out from a doctor’s busy lanyard. She said she wasn’t sure anyone noticed. I told her the people who need it, see it.

Invest in Resilience

Splurge on a convenience that will free up time or energy for resistance work. If you always burn the rice, get a rice cooker and call your Senator while you use it. Return a gift you didn’t really want, and get something you can use!
