As the end of the school year approaches, you may be planning gifts for teachers and volunteers. Skip the Starbucks gift certificate. Once the same pick, more and more people are boycotting them for union busting. Instead, pick up gift certificates to a locally owned coffee shop, or other local business. It’s easy to do!

Three well-known Black leaders say Target is off the hook. Organizers of the original Target boycott say “Nope!” If you’re confused and exhausted, shift to sustainability: rank the places you shop from best to never, based on your own personal math. Your values and needs go into the math. Then shop as high on the list as you can, every time.

School Lunch

Support families

Families are struggle to keep up with bills amid SNAP eligibility reductions and fear of triggering immigration review. Call your local school district and ask to pay off a student’s lunch debt, or offer to buy supplies for a classroom. Schools are a way to help the most vulnerable families anonymously.

Public Funding

The Corporation for Public Broadcasting was defunded and then shut down to avoid being mis-used. This leaves PBS, NPR, and hundreds of local radio and tv stations in our hands. Donate and get great content, or buy merchandise to keep them going! We’re currently binging “All Creatures Great and Small” when the world is too much.

Spend SNAP

SNAP benefits roll over, so don’t feel obligated to spend down every month, but if you routinely have more than you spend, share! Yes, this happens, particularly for older single people with multiple food supplements. You might not think of yourself as someone with extra to share, but if you’re carrying a balance every month, you are! Build up a shelf-stable backstop against rising prices, then start helping people!

Tithe for Change

If you are a member of a religious organization call the office and ask how to get involved with the program feeding and housing people in your area. Volunteer or donate to that committee or group.

If your religious organization isn’t helping struggling people divert your usual contributions to a group that is. Tell them why.
