Good Neighbors

Create relationships in your neighborhood. Do it formally through a neighborhood project, or take the next step with someone. Wave, borrow a cup of sugar and take back cookies, or invite them to dinner. Start slow and build.

This is especially easy to do over the holiday season when dropping by with cookies or inviting folks over for an open-house hot-cocoa bar are entirely normal things to do.

“Swear Jar”

Guilt can motivate us, or cripple us. Turn those negative feelings into positive action. Choose something you feel badly about—saying nothing to your dad, or ordering from Prime, etc.—and plan a “penance” you’ll do each time. You might make a call to Congress, or tip the delivery driver in cash. Pick something that fits the “crime” and then let go of the guilt.

Shift your spending from massive corporations to small artists, local venues, or better companies. Replace a Sinclair station with PBS Passport, buy from bookshop.org instead of Amazon or dump Spotify. Search local news for a concert, comedy show or art festival today!

Trans(cend) bigotry

If you don’t know anyone transgender and the whole thing makes you uncomfortable, watch “Will & Harper,” a documentary about Will Farrell taking a road trip with an old friend, newly out. If you already know you stand with trans folks, get a button to wear, print zines, and don’t forget to call your state Senator to ask if there’s legislation you need to oppose!

Name It

There are terms we all throw around. He’s an authoritarian building a fascist government. ICE violates our constitutional rights. Or maybe you don’t use those words, because you’re not certain what they mean. Either way, choose ONE current news story and develop an “elevator pitch” explaining your position, using strong, accurate language.
