Before the internet, bookstores were the commons for information and community. Today, like all local brick-and-mortar, they’re nearly extinct. We can’t fight oligarchs without addressing monopoly, so one of the ways we resist is through supporting local business. Buy your books locally when you can. Go spend time in the place you live! Visit a museum, stroll through an arboretum, or show locally. Be a tourist in the place you live and bring new eyes to the experience. Chat with shop owners and get to know your own city in a new way.
Take a class to build resilience (cooking, sewing) or meet people (art, sports) to build community, defeat burnout, and keep the local economy going. Start at your library or community college and look for something interesting! Many classes are sliding scale and taught by local people.
