5 Minutes

Are you a busy person who wishes you could resist more? Start where you are and take one step forward. Choose a schedule you can keep and commit to one five minute act of resistance. It can be daily (while you wait for the coffee to perk) or weekly (during your lunch break Wednesday) or even monthly. It can be five minutes of a larger task, or discrete, individual actions. What’s key is this: do just a little more than you were doing.

Eradicate Obstacles

We all have a long list of things we’re going to get to any day now. From calling Congress to having lunch with a friend, most of us are chronically behind on everything, and resistance is no exception. Because resisting is a new habit for many of us, it takes conscious planning to make sure it happens. Pick an act of resistance you already decided to do, and eradicate the obstacles!

Tithe for Change

If you are a member of a religious organization call the office and ask how to get involved with the program feeding and housing people in your area. Volunteer or donate to that committee or group.

If your religious organization isn’t feeding hungry Americans, divert your usual contributions to a group that is. Tell them you’re doing this until SNAP is restored.

Be Social

Build a pool of friends you can talk things over with. Take turns processing, start a book club, or just check in once a month over wine. If you don’t know who to ask, start with lunch with someone you suspect has similar values. Build from there. We all need community we can be ourselves with, so actively work to build yours.
